SUSTAINABLE FILMING IN VALENCIA
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was signed in 2015 by the Heads of State and Government of the United Nations member countries. It represents the international commitment to face the social, economic and environmental challenges of globalization, putting people, the planet, prosperity and peace at the center, under the motto of "leaving no one behind". The 17 sustainable development goals set are universal and are intended to be profoundly transformative. They address the roots of poverty, inequality, and the degradation of the planet. From València Film Office we want to contribute to them, offering some proposals to promote sustainable and more respectful filming both with the environment that surrounds us and with social welfare.
1. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation
AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT AND SUPPLIERS
Develop and implement measures or messages aimed at promoting local culture and products during filming. Work with reusable sets, create local jobs and make a constant effort to innovate whenever possible to incorporate sustainability measures.
2- Achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls
AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT
Contribute to social welfare by launching gender equality messages in your productions and share them through social networks or other media. Seek gender equality in hiring, in salaries and in all aspects where inequalities can be generated.
3- Ensuring the availability of water, its sustainable management and sanitation for all
IMPLEMENT GOOD PRACTICES IN THE USE OF WATER
Water is a scarce and expensive commodity. It reduces consumption by making efficient use of it by avoiding single-use bottled water and provides reusable bottles or cups and water dispensing fountains. Also study if you have running water near the set, in Valencia it is of high quality and efficiently managed with the highest efficiency rate in Europe, 87%. The best way to reduce your carbon and water footprint is to use tap water. It protects natural resources.
4- Ensuring access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy for all
MAKE EFFICIENT USE OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY
Reduces energy consumption by implementing energy efficiency measures such as turning off lights when not in use, avoiding standby mode of electrical appliances, unplugging chargers after use, etc. Uses efficient generating sets and class A appliances. It uses LED and low energy consumption bulbs. Charge your walkies with solar energy. Reduce to the maximum the use of air conditioning.
5- Ensuring healthy living and promoting well-being for all at all ages
AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT
Contribute to well-being by launching messages, green values in your projects. Show responsible behaviour towards the environment through your characters or protagonists: recycling, drinking in reusable bottles. Implement sustainability measures in your audiovisual productions and communicate them to your teams by means of informative posters, call sheet announcements, and ecological feats achieved. At the end of the production, evaluate the environmental results obtained and share them with the team. Communicate the measures you take to make your filming more sustainable and spread the results obtained on social networks.
HEALTH MEASURES
Make sure that the film sets comply with all the health measures dictated by the relevant authorities at any given time.
6- Manage forests sustainably to prevent desertification, halt and reverse land decline and halt biodiversity loss
PROTECTS LOCATIONS AND THEIR SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL ENVIRONMENT
Minimize the possible impacts of your filming on a location by delimiting and signposting the areas of occupation and identifying and protecting the plants, trees, deposits or any other heritage or natural resources nearby. Minimize noise and avoid light pollution, especially if it is an outdoor location. It anticipates possible disturbances to citizens by establishing communication channels with town halls, neighborhood associations, etc. and promotes local employment and the inclusion of disadvantaged groups. It leaves the location as it was.
GREEN RUNNER
Define sustainability roles in the team or hire a Green Runner or Eco Manager to carry out environmental monitoring of production. Design an environmental monitoring plan that includes checklists, a system of assessment indicators, or the calculation of the carbon footprint. If it is a protected natural area, coordinate these actions with its management body. Offsets the emissions produced directly or through associations, foundations, or local companies.
7- Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns
SUPPLIERS
Choose local or green suppliers that provide their services and products with no or minimal impact on the environment. Sustainable catering, renewable energies, eco office material, etc. Select products with responsibility certificates. Reduce the use of paper and printing. Implement electronic means for work plans, orders, scripts.
TEAM
Awareness to the team, appoint a Green Runner or ECO Manager to organize and coordinate the measures. Create motivational initiatives such as rewarding the "green" person or department in the shoot.
CATERING
Hire a local restaurant service close to the location. Promote the hiring of a catering service that encourages the purchase of local and seasonal products, uses biodegradable or reusable crockery and cutlery, avoiding the use of disposable resources.
8- Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
LOCATE RESPONSIBLY
When selecting production locations, try to choose as few as possible that are close to each other. Find out about the environmental characteristics and regulations of the locations and consider the environmental effects that your production may involve. Optimise the movement of the equipment.
LABOUR STANDARDS
It scrupulously complies with existing labour agreements, conventions and other regulations regarding hiring.
9- Take urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects
REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE
Incorporate these values into all your film projects. Implement measures to reduce, reuse, separate and recycle waste such as paper, glass and plastic. Avoid the acquisition of disposable products, encourage the reuse of materials, plan the volume, type and number of containers, as well as their distribution at the location to encourage separation. Donate art materials to another production and reuse or donate clothing. Uses SFC certified wood for construction of sets.
COMPENSATION
Offset your carbon footprint, either by carrying out a reforestation project in the main filming location, or by asking the environmental department or an NGO about the solutions you can choose to offset your footprint.
10- Conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE
Incorporate these values into all your film projects. Implement measures aimed at reducing, reusing, separating and recycling waste such as paper, glass or plastic to prevent it from ending up in the sea. Plan the volume, type and number of containers as well as their distribution at the location to encourage separation.
COMPENSATION
Offset your carbon footprint by asking the environment or underwater life department of an NGO about solutions to offset your footprint. There are projects both in the Oceanogràfic and in the Devesa-Albufera.
11- Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
ACCOMMODATION
Choose hotels or accommodation near the main shooting location. Give preference to sustainable hotels, with a specific environmental policy or that calculate their carbon footprint.
TRANSPORT
Whenever possible, choose electric or hybrid transport, organize the team to share transport, choosing large capacity vehicles. It also organises journeys efficiently. Encourage the use of bicycles. Give priority to the use of the train over the plane.
12- Revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development
This Decalogue is based on the 17 objectives of sustainable development to transform our world, proposed by the United Nations Organisation and on the sustainable proposals for audiovisual production proposed by national organisations such as the Tenerife Film Commission, Malaga Film Office, Promálaga, APPA, the A PCP and the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. From Valencia Film Office we join this challenge, contributing to the care and transformation of the planet.
